CANYON CITY A Childrens Health and Safety Fair at Humbolt Elementary School drew children from all the county schools to learn a variety of safety tips.

At the May 10 fair, students in kindergarten through sixth grade got to escape from a smoking room, tried out taekwondo moves and learned what to do if they see a gun. Other workshops taught proper dental care and how to prepare for natural disasters.

The smoking room was a mock-up of a childs bedroom inside the Oregon State Fire Marshals demonstration trailer. The room filled with fake smoke as firefighters led the students through, making sure they stayed low, checked the door for heat, and escaped through a window.

Jessie Lewis and John Day Police Chief Rich Tirico taught children the Eddie Eagle basics: Stop, dont touch, leave the area, tell an adult, if they see a gun.

Students visiting taekwondo instructor Evan Franulovichs workshop got to kick and make noise, but also learned that if theyre bullied, they should first ask the person to stop. If that doesnt work, the following steps should be taken: avoid the person, ask someone trustworthy for help such as a parent, teacher or police officer.

Franulovich encouraged his audience to be physically fit and confident.

Other workshop helpers included hygiene students from Oregon Dental Sciences (ODS) School of Dental Hygiene in La Grande and American Red Cross staff members from Bend as well as members of Grant County Commission on Children and Families.

The event was sponsored by Grant County Safe Communities Coalition and Oregon Department of Transportations traffic safety division. The event takes place at Humbolt every other year during school hours.

Coordinator Debi Hueckman said she was happy all the students in the county could participate.

All those safety tips are really important things that we sometimes take for granted, she said. I appreciate all the volunteers taking time to make this happen.
