Catholics welcome new bishop

JOHN DAY Over the Memorial Day weekend, parishioners at John Days St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church welcomed the Most Rev. Liam Stephen Cary, who was consecrated May 18 as the new bishop for the Diocese of Baker.

Bishop Cary led Masses at St. Elizabeths Saturday and Sunday, assisted by Rev. Albert Lakra, new pastor at St. Elizabeths, and was honored with a reception in the parish hall. Bishop Cary, a Portland native, moved to Prineville at a young age. Cary succeeds the Most Rev. Robert F. Vasa, who served as bishop of Baker from 2000 to 2011.
Rev. Lakra, who previously served as pastor of St. Helens in Pilot Rock, came to the United States from India three years ago.
