PILOT ROCK Two John Day Little League all-star softball teams put in a good showing at the all-star tournament at Pilot Rock June 24 – 26.

The girls practiced two to three hours every night after the end of the regular softball season to prepare for the tournament, assisted by their coaches Zach Williams, Mike Strong, Lance Zweygardt, Melissa Crider and Tammy Clark.

Both teams played hard and won against Baker City on June 25. One highlight was a homerun hit by 10-year-old Hailie Wright, who received a medal from the district for her accomplishment.

The two teams were matched against Pendleton on June 26, and played in spite of the rain, wind, and two half-hour breaks due to lightning. Both of the teams lost to Pendleton, but Williams said they played hard and I am really proud of them.

The all-stars were divided into ages 9-10, and 11-12, and found themselves competing against teams from La Grande, Pilot Rock, Milton Freewater, Baker City and Pendleton.

The 9- and 10-year-old team included Macy Strong, Baylee Combs, Shaine Madden, Taylor Allen, Hailie Wright, Madi McKrola, Alex Cook, Kaylee Wright, Averie Wenger and Tiler Voigt.

The 11- and 12-year-old team included Ravyn Walker, Mariah Moulton, Breann Crider, Reagan Shelley, Tegan Wright, Rose Vandehey, Fallon Weaver, Whitney McClellan, Sydney Brockway, Cody Jo Madden and Brianna Zweygardt.

Each of the girls teams did better than the year before, Williams said, and we are looking forward to hosting the all-star tournament in John Day next year.
