Rain damps down fire danger on Malheur

JOHN DAY Effective Monday, the Malheur National Forest has moved to Industrial Fire Precaution Level I, as the fire danger dropped to moderate.

Officials have lowered levels as a response to the recent lower temperatures, increased relative humidity and moisture in the region.

Forest officials on Sunday lifted the personal use restrictions, with firewood cutting allowed again. Campfires outside designated recreation areas also are permitted, but campers must make sure their fires are dead out and cold to the touch before leaving them.

Hunters, campers, and firewood cutters are urged to use extreme caution with all flammable materials, as the potential for wildfires still exists.
