The Morrow/Grant County Off Highway Vehicle Park hosted a special spike-only second season elk youth hunt Nov. 3-11, through an application/draw system to encourage outdoor family recreation.

Organizers said the special hunt is a way for the park to give back to Morrow and Grant County residents, as without the counties initial support this park would not have been possible.

This year there were six applicants from Morrow County and one from Grant County. All seven applicants were drawn and were sent packets with information pertaining to the hunt.

The weather was cool with snow showers throughout the season. A few participants reported seeing signs of other animals, but no elk.

However, Railey Namitz of John Day was more fortunate. She not only saw elk, but was able to shoot her first elk at the park.

Joe Zellars from Boardman also tagged his first bull elk this season, although not at the OHV Park.

Park staff congratulated both Railey and Joe and sent their appreciation to the people who helped make the program a reality.
