J. Campbell Martin of Dayville informs the Eagle, I noticed in your article on the Highway, that you use the name Grand Canyon for the gap leading into Butlers Basin where Mr. James Cant has his new beautiful home. The U.S. Geological Survey of the University of California gave it the name of Picture Gorge, and it is thus described in their official publication. The highway from Picture Gorge is now graveled and is in fine shape.

Dr. Hugh Fate, local physician and surgeon, took quite a spill Sunday evening. He was on call, driving his car to the hospital at Prairie City when, out of the darkness and fog, a big bunch of cattle loomed up before him. On the icy road, his car skidded over the bank and into the ditch. The doctor emerged from the wreckage all in one piece with nary a scratch. Had he been hurt however, he would have had good care, because three distinguished occupants of another car none other than the county coroner, Carl Driskill; the district attorney; and the local state police sergeant witnessed his upset. Although Dr. Fate was unhurt, his car will have to undergo an operation.

There were very few breathers Friday night for the big crowd that filled the Grant Union High School gym to see the Grant Union varsity come from behind to tie, then nose out, the Prairie City Panthers, 34-32, in the last minute and a half of a thrill-packed basketball game. The hardboard hair-raiser marked resumption of varsity play between the two neighboring schools after more than six years without Panther-Prospector court clashes.

County school administrators are seeking a better understanding between themselves and the county court on allocation of excess road funds, says Bob Batty, administrator of the Grant Educational Service District. That understanding got off to a slow start last week, however, as school leaders walked away from a meeting with the county court, somewhat perplexed after being cut short on their presentation. Both Batty and County Judge Lorene Allen stated that the county and schools need to avoid an adversary relationship over the distribution of money.
