Stormy weather in softball

JOHN DAY The Grant Union softball team was shut out by Ridgeview High School in a tough doubleheader on March 20, losing 0-11, and 0-7.
Stephanie Croghan started on the mound for the Prospectors, pitching into the wind on a cold, blustery day.
After the Ravens lead-off batter was called for a strike on a 2-2 count, the umpire decided to stop the game due to poor weather and send both teams to their dugouts.
The game resumed after a short break, and Croghan struck out Marshall. A line drive over the head of the second baseman and a sacrifice fly gave the Ravens a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the second.
Kennedy Nash connected for a hit in left field and then advanced to third on a hit by Rayne Houser. The Prospectors were unable to bring Nash home, leaving the tying run on third as they took the field for the second inning.
The Ravens warmed up in that inning. With the bases loaded Anna George hit a deep fly ball over the centerfielder, scoring three. After a couple of walks, a grass-line fly just over the shortstops head scored two more.
After one and a half innings the Ravens led 5-0.
As stormy conditions continued, the Prospectors had a chance to score in the second inning, but Sydney Stearns was tagged out at home.
Two Prospector errors allowed the Ravens to extend their lead to 7-0 in the top of the fifth. Then Ridgeview hitting added four more runs, and the game ended in five innings, 11-0.
The second game of the doubleheader began with a familiar trend. The Ravens continued their hot hitting, launching numerous fly balls to the Prospector outfield.
Short Prospector rallies were halted by the Ravens strong fielding.
The Prospectors, despite good fielding efforts of their own and contact with the ball, fell to the Ravens in the second game, 0-7.
The Prospectors play again on Saturday, April 6, at noon, hosting Wallowa in a double-header in John Day.
