A tipped-over camp stove is being blamed for the Gordon Butte Fire that broke out along the Lower Deschutes River, 10 miles west of Wasco, over the weekend.
Firefighters from the Prineville Bureau of Land Management and North Sherman County Rural Fire Protection District were still working the fire Tuesday.
The fire was 50 percent contained Tuesday afternoon, with full containment expected by Wednesday evening.
The Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center said investigators were working with the person responsible for the camp stove incident to determine what happened.
The fire has spanned 3,300 acres. Firefighters were establishing lines and targeting hot spots to keep the fire from flaring up in the windy afternoon conditions.
About 80 firefighters and five engines were dispatched to the fire, with a helicopter and two hotshot crews supporting the efforts.
Campfires and barbecues are prohibited along the river this time of year, but gas and propane stoves are allowed. Fire officials are reminding visitors to make sure stoves are used only on non-burnable surfaces in areas clear of vegetation, and that they be monitored at all times.
