March of Dimes – saving babies, together

JOHN DAY The sixth annual McKalees March of Dimes Walk drew 30 local participants Saturday morning a bright and early start to 62 Days.

The event is held to increase awareness for premature birth, preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality through research, community services, education and advocacy. As the nation sits at the 70 percentile mark for premature birth, the March of Dimes program is trying to help mothers take charge of their health, and to support families facing serious health issues.

Walkers took the street in front of Sels Brewery in Canyon City en route to the stoplight, two miles south in John Day, before heading back to the brewery to cross the finish line.

As the temperatures rose to just over 70 degrees, some walkers were surprised to see a water and cookie stop near the Grant County Soil and Water Conservation District office. Kody Jo Madden was there to pass out refreshments to the participants, walking in an event that honors the memory of her sister McKalee.

Also at the March of Dimes event, information tables were set up to provide opportunities for bone marrow donations for the Drive for Lives program.
