Fathers Day barbecue at Valley View

All are welcome to a free Fathers Day barbecue, at Valley View, 112 N.W. Valley View Dr. Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife staff will offer a fishing presentation, with a fishing venture to follow at the pond on Patterson Bridge Road, behind Oregon Trail Electric.

Barbecue pool party for moms and sons

5-8 p.m., Gleason Pool, John Day

The pool party and barbecue is for boys in grades kindergarten-six, and their moms or mom figures. There will be pool games, hamburgers and hot dogs, and more. The cost is $20 for those in the John Day/Canyon City Parks and Rec District, and $25 for all others. Registration is limited to the first 50. Benefit chili feed, silent auction for Micheal Teel

5-7 p.m., Strawberry Grange Hall, Prairie City

Proceeds will help with medical and travel expenses for Micheal Teel, who has three tumors and is undergoing treatment at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland for melanoma. The dinner of chili, cornbread and drinks is by donation. Silent auction items include gift baskets, a five-shelf grow house donated by John Day True Value and a bird whimsey thermometer donated by Nydams Ace Hardware. Movie night at Monument School

The Monument Student Council, the FFA and the Flying Tigers are sponsoring monthly movie nights. The 6 p.m. show is intended for younger audiences. Admission is free, and concessions, including pizza by the slice, are available.

Grant County Health Fair

6 a.m.-noon, Grant Union Junior-Senior High School, John Day

Tests available include blood draws for $30 a person, and prostate screening for $15. Fasting is required for 12 hours prior; water and medications are okay. People are encouraged to preregister payment is required for the tests at the Grant County Health Department.

Several health care providers, as well as representatives from health-minded organizations will be available. Two peer support groups, Frontier Leadership Network and Grant County Circle of Friends will be on hand, and Safe Communities Coalition will have their drug take back booth. Flag retirement, DAR meeting

10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., La Grande

A flag retirement, sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Legion will be held at Legion Post 43, 301 Fir St., La Grande. Any flags that are faded and worn may be dropped off for disposal.
