Pearl Coombs has had a lot of birthday cakes during her life, but this was the first one with a triple-digit number on top.

Coombs, who lives at Valley View Assisted Living in John Day, celebrated her 100th birthday on June 13.

She was surrounded by family, friends and Valley View staff who helped mark the big occasion.

Coombs was born in 1913, and was raised along with eight siblings on her familys Hereford ranch. She rode a horse from the ranch three miles to school in Hereford, where she graduated.

At age 15, she married Frankie Owen, and they had two children, Douglas and Lana.

In 1942, the family moved to Bates, where Frank worked for the Oregon Lumber Company. They lived there for 26 years until the mill closed.

They moved to Prairie City where Pearl worked at The Branding Iron and other restaurants, and also at a few John Day businesses.

After Franks death, Pearl married Alfred Coombs. After he died, she moved to John Day.

Over the years she kept active in such groups as the Bates Womens Club, the Green Thumb Garden Club of Prairie City, and the Mad Hatters Red Hat Society group. Her hobbies include gardening, flowers, canning and cooking.

On turning 100, Coombs said, Well, I?hope you all are able to give me a party when Im 200.

To which her daughter, Lana replied, Mother, I think youll be the only one at the party.
