JOHN DAY Christmas tree permits are on sale at Malheur National Forest offices.
Permits cost $5, and are available weekdays from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Supervisors Office in John Day. They also are available from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Prairie City Ranger District office in Prairie City and the Emigrant Ranger District office in Hines, except for the 11:30 a.m. lunch hour.
The Hines office also will be open on Saturday, Nov. 30, from 8 a.m. to noon.
The offices are closed on Thanksgiving Day.
A valid permit must be attached to each tree that is transported from the forest, with a maximum of five allowed per household.
Permit holders can cut trees of any species, as long as the tree is shorter than 12 feet tall. No cutting is allowed on Forest Service nurseries and plantations, or within 150 feet of highways or 300 feet of streams.
Tree seekers will find pine at lower elevations on the forest and firs and cedars higher up.
The permits include more instructions on Christmas tree harvesting.
People are urged to check the weather and road conditions before setting out, to dress warmly, and pack water, food and a first-aid kit. They should also let someone know their travel plans, and maintain a vehicle thats equipped for winter driving. Its a good idea to give all members of the tree party a signal whistle and stay aware of each others locations.
