Easing pain with lights

JOHN DAY A mix of poetry, music, prayers and candles helped people ease pain and share comfort as they remembered loved ones during Blue Mountain Hospices eighth annual Light up a Life.

Among those speaking at the Dec. 12 event, held at Valley View Assisted Living in John Day, were Hospice director Sylvia Dowdy with the introduction; Rev. David Hoeffner from Prairie Baptist Church, who offered the message; and nurse Richard Smarr, who read a poem and a closing prayer.

Pastor Levi Manitsas and Larry Baughman read names of loved ones people had submitted, while Shannon Winegar and Jessie Saul lit candles for each.

Music for the evening was provided by Amanda Myers, and the Grant Union High School choir conducted by Mary Ann Vidourek.
