ADRIAN The Dayville/Monument Tiger girls faced challenges head on at last weeks Adrian Tournament.
On Friday, they fell 13-48 to their first opponents, the solid 3A Nyssa Bulldog team.
We played hard, said head coach Jay Kenyon. Theyre bigger, stronger, faster.
The girls made a comeback Saturday, pushing out Adrian 27-26.
Their halftime score was 19-8 and the team managed another 8 in the second half.
We werent as aggressive in the second half, and not executing our offense, Kenyon said. A high number of turnovers hampered our offensive production.
He highlighted Skylar Powell and Alix Perkins for their tenacious defense.
In the Harper/Huntington game, Treiquella Osborne scored 15 and Renee Inscore had 6.
The fourth-quarter thrill came when Hannah Flower sank two free throws, key to winning the game.
The Tiger boys took home losses from the event, but had a close game Saturday.
Nyssas size was a big factor in Fridays game, with their players 4-5 inches taller than the Tigers in every position. Nyssa handed the Tigers a 41-83 loss.
They executed extremely well, and theyre a well-coached team, said Tiger head coach Jay Schafer. We still need to work on execution. There were some bright spots, as always, we just need to make those more frequent and consistent.
He noted the team took a hit after their starting center, Max Cooper, injured his knee in a recent practice, serious enough to put him out for the season.
Jack Jewell is now taking his spot and doing a good job, Schafer said.
The boys had a better showing against Harper/Huntington the following day, losing by just one point, 51-52.
The Tigers were down 15 points with 3 minutes left in the game, but caught fire and took the lead with just 17 seconds left.
We committed an unnecessary foul and they sank two free throws, Schafer said. Thats the way it goes. Theyre a good bunch of kids and they will bounce back theyre fighters and that showed in the Harper/Huntington game.
High-point scorer Colten Winters shot 13 points in each game.
The Tiger boys and girls will travel to Klamath Falls for the Triad Tournament this Friday and Saturday.
Other teams scheduled to play at the tournament are the Triad Timberwolves, New Hope Christian Warriors of Grants Pass and Sherman Huskies of Moro.
Well have two tough games, no matter what happens well have to be on top of our game, Schafer said. We play these to find out what we need to work on and find our weaknesses so we can fix them. Well see how things play out I expect improvement.
