According to John Day Fire Chief Ron Smith, a defective piece of chimney pipe from a woodstove is the suspected cause of a fire at space 5.
No one was home at the time, but the owner and resident, Desi Burril, and her daughter, learned about the fire and arrived soon after.
Smith said the call came in at 3:56 p.m.

When John Day Fire crews with two engines arrived minutes later, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office and John Day Police were on scene, working the blaze with a fire extinguisher.
Smith said the fire got into the attic area, and roofing material was dropping onto the floor. He said they attacked the blaze with water, and were able to contain the damage to the area around the chimney, although there was considerable smoke damage throughout the home.
Clean up took about two hours, and no mutual aid was needed from other fire crews, Smith said.
He said the Burrils are staying with family in the area for now.
An account has been set up to assist the family at Old West Federal Credit Union.
