The Dayville/Monument Lady Tiger basketball team is a young and improving squad.

The roster includes four freshmen, three sophomores, two juniors and two seniors.

The team is 6-10 overall, with some close losses in the mix – they are 2-1 in league.

The Tigers had a recent win streak, beating Harper/Huntington, Arlington, Long Creek/Ukiah and Mitchell/Spray, but followed up with two close losses last week to Prairie City and Adrian.

The team is coached Jay Kenyon and assistant coach Heather Near.

Kenyon said the team has a lot of talent. While they play well on defense, he added, they have had some trouble holding onto the ball and scoring to finish close games.

Illness and injuries have kept the team from operating at top notch, but Kenyon said he hopes the rest of the season goes well.

“The girls are doing great,” he said. “We’re going to work on defense, shooting, rebounds, and try to eliminate turnovers.”

The remaining games include another match against Prairie City, and Kenyon believes his team is capable of beating them with the right mindset.

“We’re looking forward to the next three games in league and hope for a good showing at district,” he added.

The two seniors, Renee Inscore and Alix Perkins, have been key players for the Tigers.

“We have a pretty young team, but I’m really proud of how they’ve stepped up and played,” Inscore said. “I think we’re improving by every game.”

“I’m looking forward to the rest of the season,” Perkins said. “Even though we have a young team, I feel like I need to improve myself for the betterment of my team.”
