JOHN DAY – St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church has a new pastor, the Rev. Nonatus Lakra.
The Rev. Lakra, who has been at St. Elizabeth’s since early November, was appointed pastor just before Christmas.
Born and raised in eastern India, Lakra was ordained to the priesthood in 1991, and has lived in the United States since 2006.
He spent seven years with the Diocese of Lansing, Mich. – which means he’s no stranger to frigid winter weather. Other places he’s visited include New York, Florida and Chicago.
Lakra has been with the Diocese of Baker since May, and spent four months at St. Helen Catholic Parish in Pilot Rock before coming to John Day.
His hobbies include gardening, fishing, sightseeing and golf. The latter he learned to play while in Michigan; he looks forward to getting in rounds at the John Day Golf Course. He also likes to walk, which he does every morning.
On living in Grant County, Lakra said, “This is beautiful country.”
He added that he’s been warmly welcomed here, saying, “People here are loving. They care for their priest and are supportive.”
St. Elizabeth Catholic Church is at 111 S.W. 2nd Ave. The church’s office number is 541-575-1459.
