Medford, Ore. — The Medford Police Department is warning about a scam targeting job seekers.

According to police, a local bank reported that eight of their members have been targets of a scam originating on Craigslist. The victims are responding to ads for housekeeper or nanny jobs. They’re being accepted for the jobs and sent an advanced check for much more than the amount of their salary. The scammer then asks the victim to keep some of the money and “money gram” the rest to another person.

Turns out the check is fake and the victim is out any money they sent. Police said Thursday the bank intercepted four transactions before the money was sent.

Here are some tips the Medford Police Department provided to avoid a scam:

· Deal locally with folks you can meet in person

· Never wire funds via Western Union or Money Gram

· Fake cashier checks and money orders are common – banks will

hold you responsible

· Never give out financial information

· Avoid any deals involving shipping or escrow services

· Don’t rent a house or purchase goods sight-unseen

· Do not submit to credit or background checks online.
