Oregon plans to go right back at Jordan Bachynski.

The Ducks insist they can’t shy away from the nation’s leading shot-blocker when they host Arizona State tonight in a key Pac-12 Conference men’s basketball game for their NCAA Tournament chances.

“We’ve got to keep going right at him,” Oregon senior forward Mike Moser said. “Make officials make calls. He is a great shot blocker, but we have to make him work for it.”

Moser was named Pac-12 Conference player of the week Monday, but Bachynski earned that honor after his last game against the Ducks on Feb. 8 when he had 26 points, nine rebounds and nine blocks in ASU’s 74-72 win. The 7-foot-2 center leads the nation with 123 blocks, giving him one block for every 10.2 two-point field goals attempted by opponents.

“It is hard to adjust against 7-foot,” Oregon coach Dana Altman said. “He’s going to give us problems, because defensively he is so good with all the blocked shots, but you still have to take it in there, take it at him.”

Oregon guard Joseph Young, whose game-tying attempt in the final seconds at Arizona State was blocked by Bachynski, said the Ducks have to think before they drive to the hoop.

“You have to attack his outside foot,” Young said. “Make a complete jump stop when you get to the paint and if you don’t have anything, kick it out.”

While Bachynski’s defensive presence is expected, the senior’s 26 points against the Ducks were a career high.

“We have to make it hard for him to catch,” Moser said. “The first game, we made it easy for him to catch the ball in the paint and when you are 7-2, the percentages are pretty high you will score in there. We need to limit his catches around the basket.”

Young scored all 29 of his points against Arizona State in the second half as the Ducks rallied from 21 points down in the final 15 minutes to take the lead before ASU pulled out the victory.

“Watching that game, I did a lot of good things and a lot of bad things,” Young said, adding that he felt he “didn’t do anything” in the first half. “We need the whole team to come in with 100 percent intensity and pull out this ballgame.”

Arizona State (21-8) is in third place in the Pac-12 at 10-6 after sweeping California and Stanford last week at home.

“They played two really good ball games,” Altman said. “It is a big game for us and we are going to have to play awfully well. Their last two games, their whole team was in a good rhythm.”

Arizona State was the last team to beat Oregon (20-8), which has won five straight games to improve to 8-8 in the conference and enhance its chances of getting into the NCAA Tournament.

“We just kind of picked it up,” Moser said. “We feel like we have a lot to lose now, so we are trying to play as hard as we can and get these wins.”

Moser has picked up his play, beginning with his first matchup against the Sun Devils. He’d been held to single digits during five of six games before he scored 14 points in the loss to ASU. During Oregon’s current winning streak, he is averaging 17.6 points, 10.2 rebounds and three assists per game, and shooting 50 percent from the field and 52 percent on three-pointers.

“I wouldn’t say too much has changed,” Moser said. “The team is just playing a lot better and on the flip side, that is helping me out as well.”

Moser had 12 points and 20 rebounds in a win over UCLA on Thursday and finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds in the victory at USC on Saturday. He also had nine assists during those two games to become the first Duck to earn conference player of the week honors since E.J. Singler in Februrary 2012.

“He’s played well,” Altman said. “For any player to go through 30 games and play at a certain level and be consistent in numbers every night is pretty tough. He had some poor shooting games, but his effort has always been good. He had a really great weekend.

“Thirty-two and 32 in two games, we’d take anything close to that this week and be real happy with it.”

Moser also was named national player of the week by Athlon Sports Weekly.

“It feels good because a lot of guys played really well last week, so it is an honor to win that,” he said. “It was a team effort to help me get that.”

Altman said he expects starting guard Damyean Dotson to play tonight after injuring his ankle against USC.

“I think he’s OK,” Altman said.
