Western Oregon University announced Monday it has the money it needs to build a new College of Education.

State lawmakers had already approved more than $17 million for a new College of Education facility in Monmouth, but Western Oregon University had to find $1.4 million in donations. It filled that gap with a single donation from an education philanthropist with ties to WOU.

Richard Woodcock taught at Western from the late ’50s to early ’60s, and went on to help create the Woodcock-Johnson IQ test.

Director of University Advancement, Tommy Love, says Western is honored to receive Woodcock’s gift.

“Dr. Woodcock could be associated with any college of education across the country,” Love said. “And he continues to choose to be a partner with Western in this.”

Love says Western plans to break ground on the new college in June, and open it in 2016.

The combined special ed, teacher prep, and health and physical ed facility promises the latest technology — like smart boards and video streams — to train future Oregon school teachers.
