SPRINGFIELD — A 41-year-old Springfield man who was shot by a police officer last week remains hospitalized but appears to have stabilized.
Officials with PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield said Monday that Brian Douglas Walker’s condition has been upgraded to “fair.”
Walker initially was hospitalized in critical condition after a Springfield police officer shot him on March 11 outside his duplex in the 4000 block of C Street.
Police on Monday identified the officer as Brian Keetle, a 10-year veteran of Springfield’s police force. Keetle is assigned to the department’s patrol division and is a K-9 handler.
Officers went to Walker’s home after receiving a 911 call reporting that Walker was suicidal and had a gun to his head.
Walker reportedly menaced a woman with the gun and fired a round from the weapon before officers arrived, police said.
Walker was shot after he emerged from a back door while still armed with the gun, police said.
Keetle was placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation being conducted by an interagency team of detectives.
Lane County prosecutors will either review investigative reports and rule on whether Keetle’s use of deadly force was justified under Oregon law, or present the case to a grand jury to make that determination.
Prosecutors also will decide whether Walker should face criminal charges.
