Vancouver, Canada. — (WHDH) A professional dancer whose leg was partially amputated as a result of the Boston Marathon bombing danced on Wednesday for the first time since the incident.
Dancing again was always the goal for Adrianne Haslet-Davis. Wednesday she wowed a crowd in Vancouver when she took center stage dancing a rumba, evening taking a dip.
“I was always determined to dance again, and I knew that I had to, that I would, and here I am,” Haslet-Davis said.
Haslet-Davis danced publicly at an international TED conference with the help of a prosthetic leg designed by Hugh Herr at the MIT Media Lab. He started designing the bionic leg specifically for dancing after visiting Haslet-Davis in the hospital. Herr says he wanted her to be able to get back to what she loved doing.
Haslet-Davis lost the bottom half of her left leg in the blast. The prosthetic is a bionic dance leg capable of providing power while dancing.
She planned to wear a short dress at her performance to show off her bionic leg. She danced with partner Christian Lightner to Enrique Iglesias’ “Ring my Bells.”
“I’m thrilled to have danced again. It was invigorating to dance publicly with my new leg, but also to realize that my return to dance may have the power to inspire other people to reach for their goals and be proactive in their lives,” Haslet-Davis said.
