Portlanders Urged To Pay Arts Tax As Oversight Committee Meets

Portlanders are being asked this week to remember to pay their arts tax. Last year’s collections totaled about half of what the city believed they should receive from qualifying residents.
The arts tax is due, same as other filings, on April 15.
The first year of collections was a rough one, due in part to technical problems. Beyond that, a lot of people just didn’t pay.
But the latest round of collections allowed city officials to send about $2.2 million to six Portland-area school districts this month. It’s the second payout since collections began last year.
Once the latest payment to the Portland Public Schools is made, payouts for arts education will total about $6.6 million, according to Revenue Bureau numbers.
Arts organizations haven’t received much cash from the program – so far about $200,000.
The oversight commission formed by the city to monitor the tax meets this Tuesday.
The agenda includes a status update from the Revenue Bureau, and some conversation about how schools report their use of the revenue.
