DA must be fair, accountable

To the Editor:
I am recently retired after spending 29 years working in the state courts in Grant County and Lane County. Based upon my years of experience, knowledge, and working with hundreds of attorneys in different capacities I am supporting Jim Carpenter for district attorney.
The courts are the impartial party in the criminal justice system, and a district attorney should be held accountable for charging decisions they make.
Our jurors are critical to the success of criminal justice system, although it is a civic duty they have a tough job and should not be blamed for an outcome. Jurors (and a judge) are merely deciding a case based upon the evidence presented and the laws of the state.
A district attorney should be fair, approach each case objectively, and have all the evidence before making a charging decision. Often a case can and should be resolved without proceeding to trial, with dedication and efficiency you have swift resolution of cases which is beneficial to all parties, and saves the taxpayers thousands of dollars.
I believe Jim Carpenter is well experienced as an attorney, and that he would be consistent, efficient, and prepared in carrying out the duties of district attorney.
