Grant County track teams on the road

SISTERS – The Dayville and Monument/Long Creek track teams competed at the Sisters Rotary Twilight Invitational last Friday, while Prairie City’s team went to Ontario’s Heinz Invitational and Grant Union attended Elgin’s track meet.
Co-coach Skip Inscore said the Sisters meet drew about 700 athletes, some from 4A and 5A schools.
“It was a quality meet,” he said.
He added that they only took their top two athletes, Colten Winters and Renee Inscore, because of the size of the event.
Each of the Monument/Long Creek athletes set new high marks in at least one event each in Sisters.
“We are preparing for districts with focus and the timing to anticipate top individual performances for the year at the state qualifier,” said head coach Earl Pettit.
The Heinz event involved 19 teams, some from large schools, and had more than 50 entries in some events.
“We did manage some PRs here,” said head coach Joe Weymouth.
Acheiving season records were Nathan Maloy in the 100-meter dash, Anthony Hall in the 100 and 200 and Chase McClung in discus.
Kyle Erickson had a season-best score in discus at Elgin.
“We have two weeks until district, and we will be starting the peaking phase of our season,” said head coach Sonna Smith. “We hope to get all of our athletes to district at the top of their game.”
Grant Union, Monument/Long Creek and Dayville are scheduled for the Baker Invitational at 2 p.m. Friday in Baker City.
Prairie City travels to the High Desert League Meet in Harper at 10 a.m. Saturday.
