- Treiquella Osborne of the Monument/Long Creek team makes her jump at the Grant Union Small Schools Invitational.
JOHN DAY – Three Flags Field was alive with action Tuesday, April 29, as athletes from 13 schools participated in the third annual Grant Union Field Events Meet.
The students enjoyed a full schedule of field events and one event on the track, the mile run.
Grant County teams at the meet included Grant Union, Prairie City, Dayville and Monument/Long Creek, and Burns, Mitchell, Burnt River, Imbler, Ukiah, Crane and Cove’s girls team also participated.
The teams are all preparing for their district meets.
“That gave some of our athletes that competition they need besides practice,” said Joe Weymouth, head track coach for Prairie City.
Four of his athletes set personal records, including Garrett Hitz, who reached 5-06 in high jump for fifth place – he was third for 1A – and 133-06 in javelin for sixth – fourth for 1A. He also pole vaulted for a first-place tie with Grant Union’s Andrew Copenhaver.
Prairie City teammates Amaya Zweygardt, Michel Hitz and Samantha Molt also gained season records.
Prairie City’s Teri Cobb earned first place in the shot put for the girls, recording a 29-07.50 mark.
Grant Union’s Kyle Erickson had a personal record in shot put with a throw of 41-10 for first place, said Prospector head coach Sonna Smith.
Michael Ashmead also set a personal record in the long jump at 19-05.50.
Grant Union’s Taylor Smith had the top overall throw in javelin for the girls with a mark of 115-09. Kenzie Wilson took second place in the long jump.
Renee Inscore of Dayville was third in javelin with a throw of 96-06 – first for 1A.
Scott Davies of Spray blew away the competition in the boys mile run, finishing in 4:52.71, a full 1:05.38 ahead of the nearest competitor.
Maya Thomas of the Monument/Long Creek team finished second for the girls in the mile run with a time of 6:26.77, on the heels of 3A Burns runner Bea Ribeiro.
Thomas’ teammate Treiquella Osborne finished first in discus with 99-09. She was also first in the triple jump, scoring 32-09.50.
Weymouth said his team will be getting ready for this week’s action.
“I am hoping to get maximum involvement and effort at our league meet next Saturday in preparation for the district meet in Baker,” he said.
