BAKER CITY – People can learn or improve their Dutch oven cooking skills in a series of five classes offered by Trail Tenders this summer in Baker City.

The classes will be at the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretative Center’s wagon encampment, or a covered patio if the weather is inclement.

All classes run from 10 a.m. to noon., and are on Saturdays.

The schedule includes:

• May 17 – Basics of cooking with the cast iron ovens over coals.

• June 21 – Soda biscuits and sausage gravy.

• July 19 – Chicken and dumplings.

• Aug. 16 – Dutch oven sinkers (donuts).

• Sept. 20 – Modern-day chicken lemon soup.

The cost is $10 for one session or $40 for the series of five, and that includes supplies. Pre-registration is required, as class size is limited.

An optional cooking kit, including a No. 10 Dutch oven and lid, cutting board and cookbook, is available for $75 at the Oregon Trail shop.
