BAKER CITY – Three Grant County track and field teams took part in the Baker Invitational last Friday as they prepare for their district track meets.

The Grant Union, Monument/Long Creek and Dayville teams participated.

Monument/Long Creek head coach Earl Pettit had five athletes competing.

“Baker was cold, windy and rainy,” he said. “It made for less than perfect performances – yet the kids placed well.”

Maya Thomas placed third in the 3,000-meter run, and Treiquella Osborne placed fourth in discus.

Dayville coach Skip Inscore said his athletes were “competitive.”

“Renee Inscore improved her best distance in javelin, Colten Winters had one good throw in javelin but scratched over the line,” he said, adding that Prestin Edmundson also improved his mark in the long jump.

Renee came in first in javelin with a throw of 121-11 – her best of the season – over Grant Union’s Taylor Smith who recored a 119-10 mark.

Renee is fourth in state for the 1A class in javelin.

Smith holds the top throw in Oregon for 2A this year at athletic.net for her 125-1 mark recorded at the Columbia River Conference Dual Meet earlier in the season.

Grant Union head coach Sonna Smith said her athletes did not set personal records at the Baker event, however, they are “sitting consistent,” she said.

“Kyle Erickson hit over 40 feet in shot put at his last three meets – which is what we were hoping for,” she said. “Our jump girls are right on target and had some really good jumps. Taylor Smith is sitting first in league in javelin and Chelsie Kodesh is fourth in league, but she’s right there in the mix for second place which would take her to state.”

The top two, or those who reach the Oregon State Activities Association qualifying mark, in each event at 2A and 1A district meets will advance to state competition.

Grant Union will travel to Union for its district meet at 11 a.m. Friday.

Prairie City, Dayville and Monument/Long Creek have their district meet in Baker City at 10 a.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.
