Ready to Rendezvous!

- Youngsters watch for the parade to roll by during the 2013 Cinnabar Mountain Rendezvous weekend. This year's event will be Friday-Sunday, May 23-25, in Mt. Vernon.
MT. VERNON – Like parades and dancing? How about racing toy ducks in the river? Maybe you’re looking for some competitive events?
The annual Cinnabar Mountain Rendezvous promises all that and more Friday-Sunday, May 23-25, in Mt. Vernon.
Activities get going Friday night with a potluck dinner, including bingo and a beer garden at 6 p.m. at the Mt. Vernon Community Hall. Meat will be provided; those attending should bring a hot or cold dish and table service.
Saturday’s fun starts off with a parade at 11 a.m. Lineup for those participating will be at 10 a.m. at the community hall. There will be awards for “youngest buckaroo” and “youngest rider.”
Riding high as grand marshal this year is Wilma Bauer.
A variety of competitive activities are scheduled for the afternoon at Phil Boyd Park in Mt. Vernon:
• 1 p.m. – Horseshoe tournament, teen scavenger hunt and ax throwing for men and women.
• 2 p.m. – Frying pan throw for women.
• 3 p.m. – Choker setting for men and women.
• 4 p.m. – Bore and Buck, with saw provided.
• 5 p.m. – Tug-of-war, for men, women and children. There will be cash prizes for men and women.
The teen scavenger hunt is for ages 10-17 in teams of four, who will vie for a prize of $150.
The day concludes with a dance – with live music and beer garden – at 8 p.m. at the community hall.
On Sunday, duck races are set for 10 a.m.. The finish line will be at the John Day River bridge on Ingle Street.
“Kids Day” games will start at 11 a.m. in the park. Rounding up the weekend is the horseshoe tournament at noon, plus the “Golden Spike” scavenger hunt, with a $200 prize at stake.
