CORVALLIS – Fresh off a strong performance at districts, Grant Union’s golf team was in the heat of competition this week in the state golf tournament at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis.
The results for the May 18-20 tourney were not available at press time, but as of Monday afternoon Grant Union was in 14th place.
“The boys want to do better today,” said head coach Ron Lundbom on Tuesday morning. “I think the whole championship environment had them a little nervous.”
This is the fifth time Lundbom has taken Grant Union golfers to state – the third time with a team – in his nine years coaching Prospector golf.
Last week, Grant Union was at the top of its game for the district tournament in Pendleton, where the Pros won second place in the tournament and in the district.
“Wow, what a tournament,” Lundbom said. “I didn’t expect what happened. This was the first time all the starters competed together, and they pulled it off. We were in third after day one and ended up second in both our district and in the tournament.”
Nathan Gehley earned fifth place in district and ninth overall. Overall, the boys team finished in the top two-thirds of the field.
Heppner’s boys shot a school record 665 for first place, and Grant Union was 755.
Low medalist for the boys was Logan Grieb of Heppner with a 160.
Nathan Gehley earned fifth-place low medalist at 179.
Rounding out scores for Grant Union: Reuben Harvey, 8th, 187; Matt Broemeling, 10th, 190; Lane Woodcock, 15th, 199; and Chance Barrietua, 20th, 234.
Chenise Clark competed individually with the girls, finishing 23rd with 227.
“The boys stepped up, and it showed,” Lundbom said. “I’m proud of the whole team sticking together throughout the season.”
