Pam Ellis, Elizabeth Swarthout enjoy the day fishing with Wayne Bernard.

The activity paired members of the John Day Elks Lodge with youth and adults with physical or intellectual disabilities for a day of fishing at the Enrights’ pond – family members also joined in the fun.

Certificates were given out to the participants, and the group enjoyed a barbecue and potluck.

Eleven-year-old Skylar Watson of John Day plans to return to next year’s event.

“He had a great time, and also enjoyed it last year too,” said his mom Sara.

Skylar fished for seven bluegill and five largemouth bass, in the catch-and-release event. He received a certificate for “patience and persistence in catching a nice mess of fish” from his fishing buddy Glenn Palmer.

Ryan Hoppe, 4, of Mt. Vernon, helped his brother Scottie Nodine catch a 15-1/2-inch largemouth bass.

“Ryan needed help reeling it in,” said his mom Kristin Nodine who added the boys had fun.

“It seemed like everyone had a great time,” said Shirley. “They always enjoy the awards, and weather-wise it was a perfect day.”
