CANYON CITY – Write-ins will fill some local offices that drew no filers for the Nov. 4 election.
County Clerk Brenda Percy said she is notifying the write-in winners. In one case where the top write-in names are tied, she said, those individuals can work out for themselves who will take the job.
In the past, write-ins who tied have flipped a coin or just reached a friendly decision.
In Prairie City, Les Church was the only filer for three city council openings and won his spot with 239 votes.
Carole Garrison had 26 write-in votes, assuring her of a second spot.
Carol Waggoner and Dotty Miller each got eight write-in votes to vie for the third post.
In Monument, Jamie Schafer garnered 16 write-in votes to top the field for mayor. Eight other names had one, two or four votes.
Steve Ussery was the top write-in candidate for Monument’s council position No. 3, with 16 votes. Seven others got a single write-in vote and Rebecca Grassl got three.
In Granite, Sandra Smith got 12 votes for mayor, while Mitch Fielding drew eight votes and Kathy Mosteit had one.
In the election for two at-large council posts, Jai Cee Heroff and Philip Dobbs each got seven votes to top a write-in field that drew 10 names. Delores Schnitzer and Mike Monroe were the next closest contenders, with four and three votes respectively.
