HEALDSBURG, Calif. – Thomas J. Maple, 70, formerly of Grant County, died in his sleep on May 14. No services are planned, in keeping with his wishes. A gathering will be held at a later date.
Mr. Maple was born July 17, 1944, in Baker, the youngest of five children. He was raised in John Day.
In 1988, shortly after moving to Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County, Calif., he became a grape farmer. He was smitten with old zinfandel grapevines, their flavors, shapes and tenacity, that crowded their house. He bought the vineyard when it came up for sale, and Maple Vineyards was born. He, with his wife and farming partner, Christina (Tina), worked over the years to make the 25 acres flourish. Grape-growing became the absolute passion of his life for 26 harvest cycles.
He was also devoted to all the orphaned dogs who found forever homes with them.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Tina; current dogs, Shorty, Maggee and Roy; siblings, Joan, James, John and Mary; and many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are under the care of Fred Young Funeral Home, 428 N. Cloverdale Blvd., Cloverdale, CA 95425.
