Forest Service: 36 homes now destroyed

JOHN DAY — The number of homes destroyed by the Canyon Creek Complex fire has risen to 36, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

More than 50 structures, including outbuildings have been damaged, and over 500 are threatened.

About 48,201 acres have burned so far, and there is 0 percent containment.

Gov. Kate Brown is scheduled to meet with firefighters this afternoon. Gov. Brown is flying into Baker City and then will drive to John Day.

Personnel fighting the fire totals 649, including two Type 1 crews, which are trained to handle massive wildfires.

Resources include seven helicopters 46 engines, 14 bulldozers, five skidgines and 16 water tankers.

The next community meeting is 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at Grant Union High School’s old gym.

Meanwhile, another fire, called the Johnson Fire, has broken out 12 miles east of Long Creek west of Sharps Ridge along Forest Road 3990. 

Local Incident Commander Steve Donnelly is managing the fire.  The fire was staffed overnight by an engine from the Oregon Department of Forestry John Day Unit.  Resources on the fire today include: five engines, one ODF dozer, and one T2 helicopter doing bucket work.

Evacuation Levels Reduced for Some Areas on the Canyon Creek Complex

The areas reduced to Level 2 are as follows:

· Adam· Eagle Peak· Pineview· Edgewood· Marysville· Gardner Ranch· Buckhorn· Little Pine· Marysville from Hwy. 395 to Dog Creek and the junction of Hwy. 26 is CLOSED TO THROUGH TRAFFIC. Only homeowners will be able to access that portion of the road. Homeowners on the lower Little Canyon Mountain Trail area can also access their homes.

Areas remaining at Level 3:

· South from Dog Creek to Little Dog Creek will stay closed and under a Level 3 evacuations· Upper end of Pine Creek from the road closure near the rock pit will remain under a Level 3 evacuation.· Canyon Creek, from the fire perimeter north at Canyon City, south to the 15, 16 junction will remain under a Level 3 evacuation.

Both sides of Izee Road from 395 to the Mike Moore Ranch remain at Level 2.
