Number of destroyed homes up to 39

Authorities found three more homes burned to the ground in the Canyon Creek Complex wildfire south of John Day, including one near Dry Soda Creek.

Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmer said the number of houses now destroyed is 39. Another 50-plus structures have been damaged, and numerous evacuations remain in effect.

The fire grew by 7,755 acres from Thursday to encompass 61,631 acres as of Friday morning. It is 13 percent contained. Crews are also dealing with another wildfire burning up Dixie Mountain four miles north of Prairie City. The cause of that fire, called the Jerry’s Draw fire is under investigation.

So far the fire has burned 150 acres and evacuation alerts are in effect.
