- Grant Union Prospector Clayton Vaughan reaches second in the game against Weston-McEwen.
JOHN DAY — The seventh inning of Tuesday’s game changed everything for the Grant Union Prospectors, as Weston-McEwen slipped past for a 3-2 win.
Weston-McEwen first got on the board in the top of the third, and Grant Union evened it in the bottom of the inning when Brogan McKrola scored off Hayden Young’s double line drive to right field. Young went 2-4 at the plate for the day.
The TigerScots scored another run in the fourth. Grant Union again evened it in the fifth, when Zack Deiter scored on an error.
The TigerScots jumped ahead one in the seventh, and the Prospectors couldn’t get the offense needed to stage a comeback.
McKrola pitched the first four innings, striking out two and giving up five hits, two runs and one walk.
Brady Burch, on the mound for the final three innings, struck out four and gave up no hits, one run and three walks.
Grant Union head coach Brian Delaney said last week his team would need to win out to make it to the state playoffs.
The top two in Special District 7 will move on to the state tournament, and Grant Union still has six games left.
The current league records are: Burns, 9-0; Weston-McEwen, 6-1; Grant Union, 2-4; Pilot Rock/Nixyaawii, 2-5; and Union/Cove, 0-9.
If Grant Union starts an upswing and Weston-McEwen and Pilot Rock/Nixyaawii lose a few of their remaining games, Grant Union could still be in the running for state.
The stakes will be high for Grant Union when they face Weston-McEwen again at 1 p.m. Friday in Athena for a doubleheader.
The Prospectors’ remaining games in the regular season include a single game versus Pilot Rock/Nixyaawii in Pilot Rock at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 10; a doubleheader versus Pilot Rock/Nixyaawii at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14; and a single game versus Union/Cove at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 17.
