JOHN DAY — The chance for postseason play looked good for the Grant Union softball team last Friday, after sweeping Riverside/Arlington 10-0 and 15-5; however, those hopes were dashed.

Echo/Stanfield lost a doubleheader to Enterprise/Wallowa/Joseph, causing Grant Union to be bumped down to fifth in the Eastern Oregon League.

Prospector Cody Jo Madden had a successful day in the circle, pitching a shutout Game One, and relieving Mariah Moulton in the second inning of Game Two to finish out the day.

Grant Union bats were hot from the start of Game One with Brianna Zweygart singling with an RBI, Natalie Stearns doubling with an RBI and Jocelynn Smith sending a runner home with a sacrifice bunt.

Moulton had an RBI off a double, and Zweygardt singled with two RBI in the fourth.

Riverside didn’t get far in the bottom of the fifth.

Grant Union shortstop Ravyn Walker got in on some double play action with an out at second, throwing to first baseman Janelle King for another out.

King got the stretch for the third out on the next play.

The Prospectors closed out the game with the 10-run rule in the fifth.

The tables started to turn as Riverside jumped to a quick 4-0 start in the first inning of Game Two.

Grant Union gained two runs in the second, then battled back in a big way in the third inning when they rallied for a 13-4 score.

Highlights from the inning include Moulton’s double, driving in Whitney McClellan, and Zweygardt’s triple, which sent Ravyn Walker to home plate.

A couple walks loaded the bases, and Railey Namitz drove Reagan Shelley and Natalie Stearns home.

Madden and Walker had one RBI each off singles at the close of the inning.

Commenting on the final game, Grant Union head coach DeAnna Nash said, “Even when we got down in the first inning, they were playing with confidence, which is really helpful.”

Nash said the entire team played with a determined attitude “top to bottom.”

“The best thing that all the girls did is that when something bad happened, they just bounced right back and didn’t let one mistake turn into another,” she said.
