The Grant Union Lady Prospectors have been setting and reaching goals all season long.

Saturday they met yet another goal, sweeping the Kennedy Trojans 3-0 in the first round state playoff game.

Grant Union, the Wapiti League champions, won the match at their home court with scores of 25-12, 25-18 and 25-22.

The Prospectors won the first two sets handily, staying ahead of the game throughout both sets, for the most part.

Grant Union’s Natalie Stearns kicked things off with a 12-0 serving run in the first set.

In the second set, the Prospectors stayed ahead until Kennedy’s Hannah Arritola went on a serving run and the Trojans tied the score 13-13.

Grant Union stayed on top after that for a 7-point win.

Kennedy gained momentum in the third, tying the score a few times, midway taking a 19-16 lead.

Prospector Heather Mosley moved Grant Union ahead with several successful serves.

Prospector Chelsie Kodesh was serving as Grant Union closed it out for the win.

“We definitely did not play as well this game as we have been,” said Grant Union head coach Shae Speth. “There is some pressure, playing a home game. I was proud of them to persevere and work through their struggles.”

She said one of their goals was to win the game in three sets.

“They are pretty focused,” she added.

Prospector Whitney McClellan was happy with the day’s success.

“I’m really excited to see how far we can go next weekend in Redmond,” she said. “I love being on the court with my teammates and can’t wait to see what next weekend holds for us.”

Teammate Hailie Wright added, “We’ve had a good season so far and came a long ways. I’m hoping we’re ending the season well with a blue trophy.”

Grant Union will play the winner of the Oakridge and St. Paul game — which was scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Oct. 29 — in the quarterfinals at 3:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at Ridgeview High School in Redmond. The championship match and the game for third take place on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Ridgeview.
