Four celebrations for the Fourth of July

Four Grant County towns will show their patriotic best as they host parades, contests, car shows and fireworks in celebration of the Independence Day.

Prairie City city recorder Taci Philbrook said they have a couple new events this year.

“We’re asking everyone to wear a red hat in support of the troops,” she said.

A red hat contest will be held at the city park in the afternoon. Also new this year is a log-sawing contest to be held near Prairie Wood Products.

“We’re excited every year,” she said. “I know that Prairie City is proud to be able to host this event.”

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Strawberry shortcake for sale at park near city hall

11 p.m.: Hamburgers at Legion Hall; FFA barbecue at park near city hall

12 p.m.: Parade

1:30 p.m.: Red hat contest, city park

2 p.m.: Log-sawing contest across from Prairie Wood Products

Dusk: Fireworks at Oxbow Ranch on County Road 60

11:30 a.m.: Jakeburgers, in front of city hall

12:30 p.m.: Baked goods auction, city park

1 p.m.: Water balloon fun game, city park (teams of two; all ages welcome)

1:30 p.m.: Favorite dessert contest, city park

2 p.m.: Award ceremony, city park

The city of Long Creek will host its Founder’s Day picnic at the city park at noon. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided, and attendees are asked to bring a salad or dessert. A guest speaker will share the history of the Keeney family who were early settlers in Long Creek. The Keeneys were shopkeepers and ranchers who donated land to the city, which was known as the Keeney addition.
