Ready to race at the Hilton Half are, from left, Alec Layden, Zachary Shockey, Kayla Layden (back), Eli Shockey, Andrea Shockey and Cole Shockey.

Sandwiched between two snowy days, participants in Saturday’s Hilton Half and Family Fun Run in Prairie City enjoyed a sunny race day.

Themed “Everyone deserves a hero!” the event is held in memory of ambulance director TR Hilton, and proceeds support the Families First Resource Center’s home visitation program in John Day.

“The kids superhero tryouts were fun to watch,” said organizer Katrina Randleas. There were eight kids who participated in the obstacle course, which was set up at Depot Park in Prairie City.

The Garmin GPS running watches went to the top female and male finishers of the half marathon and the 10K.

Barry Dew crossed the finishline first with a time of 1:41:59 in the half marathon, and the first female was Kayla Layden, finishing with a time of 1:49:37.

In the 10K, Zachary Shockey was the first male finisher with a mark of 43:22, and Jessica Madden was the first-place female with 44:45.

The 5K top placers, Tanner Elliott and Erika Dickens, received a 32 oz. hydro flask.

“Everyone enjoyed the prizes,” Randleas said.

She said she hopes more people will participate next year and noted the planning committee plans to keep the race on the first weekend of November.
