Randolph ‘Randy' Ray Wenick

Randolph “Randy” Ray Wenick, 69, passed away Feb. 9 at The Aspens in Hines.

Wenick was born April 6, 1948, in Burns to Lila and Harold Wenick. His sister, Candy, was born in 1950, and his brother, Lindsey, was born in 1952. While in school, he loved sports and excelled in football, basketball and baseball. His love for horses and roping emerged when his mother married Larry Tilley in 1959. His youngest sister, Toni, was then born in 1960.

Wenick married Mary Jo Eshelby in 1966. This union produced one child, Randi Jo, who was born in 1968. The family loved the ranch and all that the roping lifestyle had to offer them. The couple divorced in 1985. Wenick married Kathy Williams in 1990. He was soon blessed with a son, Cash, who was born in 1990. He continued with his roping, but a majority of his time was spent watching and coaching Cash throughout his sports career. Wenick then met and married Christy Finley in 2001. They shared their love for their children and their love for rodeo. Wenick had four major loves in his life: his mother, his daughter, his son and, of course, team roping.

Wenick was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in early 2014 while residing in John Day. In October 2015, he returned home to Burns where he resided until his death.

He is survived by his mother, Lila Tilley, of Burns; daughter, Randi Jo, and her husband, Chris Korell, of Sweet, Idaho; son, Cash, of Fort Rock; two grandchildren; sister Candy and her husband, Curt Conklin, of Vancouver, Washington; brother, Lindsey, and his wife, Wanda Wenick, of Bend; sister Toni and her husband, Pedro Zabala, of Burns; and numerous nieces and nephews, extended family members and a wide variety of friends that he gained throughout his life.

A funeral service was held Feb. 15 at Burns Elks Lodge 1680, with burial in the Burns Cemetery.
