Grant County sports teams were out in force Friday, May 11, competing at home and on the road.

The Grant Union Prospector baseball team had a come-from-behind 8-7 win over the Heppner/Ione Mustangs in their first 2A/1A Special District 6 playoff game in John Day.

The Prospector boys will face Elgin (which beat Culver on Friday, 3-0) at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 17, in John Day.

The Grant Union Prospector girls softball team swept Enterprise/Joseph/Wallowa 2-0 with scores of 9-7 and 11-1 today in John Day in their final league game.

The Prospector girls are the 3A-Special District 2 league champions ending the regular season with an 8-0 league record. They also beat Echo/Stanfield 16-0 on Saturday.

The Grant Union girls will host a district playoff in John Day on Friday, May 18.

In track news, the 2A Grant Union girls team defended their Wapiti League title in Union today, for the third consecutive year.

State qualifiers for the Grant Union boys are: Tanner Elliott, Jordan Hall, Drew Lusco, Duane Stokes and Mason Gerry.

State qualifiers for the Grant Union girls are: Sydney Brockway, Sierra Cates, Trinity Hutchison, Abby Lusco, Kaylee Wright and Jozie Rude also qualified for state.

Two alternates for the Grant Union girls 4×100 relay team are Shanniyah Hall and Alcie Moore. The State Championships are scheduled for Thursday-Friday, May 17-18, in Eugene.

Track and field athletes from Grant County’s 1A schools competed at the 1A-4 District Championships in Baker City.

Prairie City’s Levi Burke will compete in the high jump at state, and Megan Camarena, who received a wild card, will compete in shot put.

We will update on outcomes for Long Creek and Monument/Dayville on Monday.

The Grant Union boys golf team will compete at the OSAA State Championships in Banks on Monday and Tuesday, May 14-15.
