September 22, 1924 – May 21, 2018
Lamar Hill, 93, passed away in his home in The Dalles, Oregon on May 21, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ernestine Silvers Hill, daughters Colleen Marie Hill Hogan of Portland, Oregon, Celeste Ann Hill-Thomas (Britt Thomas) of The Dalles, Oregon and son Michael Vance Hill of Seattle, Washington. His three grandchildren are Brianna Marie Hogan, 24, Devin Ward Thomas, 24 and Alexia Erin Thomas, 19.
Lamar is preceded in death by his seven siblings; Eunice Hill Stout, Elizabeth Hill Davis, David Christopher Hill Jr., Robert Hill, Mack Hill, William Hill, Paul Hill, a niece, Alice Dear, and his parents.
Lamar was the youngest of eight children born in Sidon, Mississippi to David Christopher Hill, Sr., and Hattie May Blanchard Hill. Early family life on a cotton plantation was hard as it was the depression era. After the family lost the plantation they moved into Jackson, Mississippi where they purchased a grocery/general store with living quarters above where the family stayed. In 1938 the family moved to San Diego, California.
Following a couple years of the family running a grocery store and a lemon and orange orchard they again moved, this time north to Grant County, Oregon in 1940. He resided in John Day until 2013 when he and his wife Ernestine moved to The Springs Assisted Living Community in The Dalles, Oregon.
Lamar joined the U.S. Navy during World War II in 1943. He served on the General William Mitchell Victory Ship in the Pacific and earned several campaign medals. Returning home to John Day, Oregon, he began his business career. Lamar also spent some time in Alaska, during a building boom, doing carpentry and hanging sheetrock.
Lamar dated Ernestine Silvers on and off throughout his time in Alaska. They married on July 21, 1955 and made their home in John Day. They joined the rest of the Hill family and became long time members of the First Baptist Church, attending regularly. A few of the more prominent business developments he completed were remodeling the Traveler’s Motel, building of the Western Motel, the bowling alley, Mobile City Trailer Park and the car wash, all in John Day. He also built the Top’s Trailer Park in Madras, Oregon.
Lamar and Ernestine were blessed with three children and moved up Canyon Creek in the early 1960’s where they raised their family. Lamar was a hardworking, loving family man who was fiercely independent and lived by the principles of good moral virtues and a respect for truth and honesty. He enjoyed taking his family to church, hiking up Canyon Mountain on Sunday afternoons, occasionally panning for gold, going to the Sumpter Flea Market and collecting almost anything. He could be seen driving through town with treasures in the back of his pickup wearing a baseball cap he dug out of the trash. The Hill family leaves a legacy of working hard together, determination, but mostly love of family.
There will be a memorial service at the First Baptist Church in John Day, Oregon on August 4, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to the charity of your choice in memory of Lamar.
