The deadline to apply for the Stewart Scholarship is fast approaching.

Applications must be postmarked by July 1. Late or incomplete applications are not accepted.

The distribution amount depends on how the stock market performed and the number of qualified applicants. Last year, $576,000 was distributed with awards going to 120 Grant County students in higher education. Most students were awarded $5,000.

In 2016, the Wayne Stewart Foundation distributed $305,575 to 176 Grant County residents.

Provisions in the wills of Wayne Stewart and his son Eminger Stewart III created a perpetual fund to assist locals in pursuing careers of their choice as they attend an accredited college, university, graduate school or trade school.

Wayne Stewart and his wife Jane Quayle Stewart were residents of Dayville, along with their son Eminger, and the family had a keen interest in education.

Wayne Stewart was a Harvard graduate and Eminger Stewart was educated at Stanford University. Eminger died in Mt. Vernon in 2007.

A few requirements for the applications include a 2.0 or higher GPA in high school and the first year of post high school study, and a 2.5 or higher GPA in subsequent years of post high school study. Applicants must be a Grant County resident for one year previous to applying or have a valid reason they should be considered if not a one-year resident.

The applicant also provides a statement of goals as well as paperwork including transcripts, a copy of a page from the FAFSA form, residency and school history form and proof of citizenship.
