Born and raised in Grant County, Luke Claughton has been riding dirt bikes and ATVs on the hundreds miles of dirt roads and trails in the area since he was 3-years-old.
His father father had him on both dirt bikes and ATVs and his love of riding grew from there.
The 18-year-old has won a handful of motocross competitions across the state and when he’s not working on his senior project or at his part-time job, he is on a four-wheeler or a dirt bike.
Claughton is grateful to have grown up in John Day with its easy access to trails to ride.
His most memorable experiences are working on progressing his skills and attending races with his girlfriend.
“This area has allowed me to explore and get out and do things you can’t do in a city, it is open with hundreds and hundreds of miles of trails to ride.”
Claughton said there are off-road trails for ATV or dirt bike rides for all experience levels.
“There are endless possibilities out here with all of the trails and there are some that are advanced and others that are good for beginners.”
Either way, he said, the remoteness of the area allows for little to no interruptions.
A senior at Grant Union High School, Claughton will graduate in June. His plan is to go Wyotech, formerly known as Wyoming Technical Institute, in Laramie Wyoming to become a mechanic.
Claughton said Grant County will always draw him back.
“There is so much you can do out in the woods, it’s just a really great place.”
Claughton said less experienced riders who are new to Grant County should always ride with a friend in case of an accident.
He said it is important for riders to stay aware of their surroundings as well.
