Letter: Cruelty to animals hard to understand

To the Editor:
There are five-plus cats here in Prairie City that depend on me to feed them. I started it as a promise to the man who had lived there, but has since passed away. With permission from his grandson, I set up a table (to keep the skunks out) with a tub on its side to keep the weather out, and have for over a year and half gone over to feed them every day. They are all fixed, and there have never been kittens there because the man who called for help did so before that happened.
This morning, I found the tubs and all the food and water containers gone, and the table turned over. Someone seemed very angry that the cats are being cared for, or for some unknown reason tried to destroy their safe place. The two-legged vermin are much harder to understand, as their motives are not as simple as survival, just mean.
People are the problem in the overpopulation of cats/dogs, and for most, their cruelty/neglect is impossible to understand. Whatever happens to the animals is our fault — they don’t get to choose any of this, they are just trying to survive.
Hope 4 Paws is temporarily offline due to the number of animals that need help. We have no shelter, just spare rooms, and hearts, but all are full.
