Our coverage of the Oct. 19 arrest of a Forest Service burn boss for reckless burning in the midst of a prescribed burn continues to resonate, raising questions about federal vs. local jurisdictional issues, the wisdom of prescribed burns as a strategy and the roots of widespread antagonism toward the federal government in general and the Forest Service in particular. We are following up on those questions and more, and we plan to roll out additional follow-up stories as time goes on.

In case you missed last week’s cover story, you can read it here. Other stories from last week’s edition included the Squeeze-In Restaurant’s search for a new home, the release of a man charged with multiple sex crimes after bail was reduced, the start of the Tyler Smith trial and a feature on Elfie the pig, mascot of a local gas station.

Inside the paper was the 2022 edition of Giving Back, the Eagle’s annual salute to the many local nonprofits that help make Grant County such a great place to live. We want to thank all of our advertisers who made this 32-page section possible and who continually give their support to charitable causes.

Stories we’re chasing for this week’s Eagle include an update on the burn boss arrest plus reports on Grant County visits by two gubernatorial candidates (the unaffiliated Betsy Johnson and the Constitution Party’s Donice Smith), an ethics complaint against a local elected official and clarifying information about financing for the proposed community pool.

As always, I want to take this opportunity to thank our subscribers for their support. We can’t do this work without you!
