Baker City woman killed when tree hits pickup near Bonneville Dam

A Baker City woman was killed Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 27, when the pickup truck she was riding in was hit by a falling tree near Bonneville Dam, east of Portland.

Paula Chamu Sanchez, 20, died in the accident, which happened around 2 p.m., according to Oregon State Police.

The driver of the Dodge Ram, Rick Williams, 43, of Baker City, was injured, and he was taken to Legacy Emanual Medical Center.

According to OSP, Williams was towing a U-Haul trailer, eastbound on the freeway near a tunnel, when a tree fell, hitting the passenger side of the pickup where Sanchez was sitting.

The freeway was closed for about two and a half hours after the accident.
