In his weekly newsletter released Friday, Jan. 13, City Manager Jonathan Cannon wrote that prior to Tuesday’s meeting, which started at 7 p.m., the livestream software “malfunctioned.”
That prompted city officials to instead stream the meeting through the city’s Facebook page. Although the page is password-protected, the event had a unique meeting ID, and “all the security options checked, people joined the meeting with the intent to hijack the meeting,” Cannon wrote.
City staff weren’t aware of the hijacking, and didn’t see the inappropriate content.

During the meeting, someone called Police Chief Ty Duby to report the situation, and the city immediately shut down the live stream.
“Baker City is concerned with the cybersecurity of our meetings and the safety of our viewers,” Cannon wrote. “Baker City condemns this behavior and steps are in process to ensure this unfortunate incident does not happen again.”
