I had the great pleasure last week of welcoming back Eagle on Vacation, a long-running feature of this newspaper. After a hiatus caused by COVID-related travel restrictions, we received our first EOV submission in three years from Greg Armstrong, part of a missionary group from the John Day Church of the Nazarene that recently returned from a church-building project in Nepal. We ran that picture in last week’s paper, along with an invitation to our readers to send us pictures from their travels featuring the front page of our paper for inclusion in future issues. You can send your Eagle on Vacation submissions to editor@bmeagle.com.

And while we’re on the subject of photos, we are also soliciting reader submissions for the 2023 edition of Explore Grant County, our annual visitor guide. We’re looking for your best pictures of scenic Grant County locales, events such as ’62 Days or the Grant County Fair & Rodeo, and scenes of everyday life in this beautiful place we call home. Please send your high-resolution images in jpeg format by March 22 to editor@bmeagle.com. Please include a little information about the photo as well as the photographer’s name, so we can give you proper credit in the visitor guide.

Sometimes it seems like our front page is dominated by gloom and doom, but Page One of last week’s paper highlighted hopeful news, with stories about a runway improvement project at the Grant County Regional Airport, a tombstone restoration project in Monument and John Day’s new city manager. And sports reporter Justin Davis recapped an eventful winter season by our local prep athletes, including state titles for Grant Union/Prairie City wrestlers Mallory Lusco and Tyler Parsons.

In this week’s paper, look for stories about a visit by Ukrainian exchange students, a hefty grant to support forest restoration in the southern Blue Mountains, a plan to eliminate non-native brook trout from High Lake and two new additions to the Grant School Board.

As always, I want to take this opportunity to thank our subscribers for their support. We can’t do this work without you!
